The first chit-pull game was Panzer Command (Victory Games, 1984, Eric Lee Smith) - soon followed by Across 5 Aprils. The game presents a match-up between a German panzer division and a Soviet tank army, roughly equivalent in size.

Before he became a leading historian of the US Army in Normandy, Joseph Balkoski was well-know in the wargaming hobby as a game designer and developer. Years prior to the publication of his first book, Beyond the Beachhead, Joe demonstrated his research into the subject matter in two grand-tactical wargame designs: Omaha Beachhead (Victory Games 1987) and St-Lô (West End 1986).

Decision Games has recently repackaged Battle for Germany in a deluxe boxed version with mounted map and multi-colored counters. It prompted me to replay the original 1975 edition of this Jim Dunnigan mini-masterpiece.
